The Alzheimer's Oral Health Connection

Posted on 12/19/2022 by Dr. Michael Han
The Alzheimer's Oral Health ConnectionAlzheimer's is a disease that involves a form of dementia and it mainly affects the brain reducing mental capacity and functioning of daily living skills. This disease is associated with a limited lifespan.

After initial diagnosis, the limited lifespan is about 8 years. The disease is common among older people yet research has not come up with the causes of the condition. There are risk factors in connection to Alzheimer's such as age, genetic issues, and family history. Alzheimer's is connected to oral health.

Periodontal Disease and Alzheimer's

Dementia can be the cause of gum disease, this is because a person who has Alzheimer's will most likely forget taking care of their teeth by observing oral hygiene. When you skip oral hygiene procedures you are likely to develop plaque and tartar. This eats up your teeth and forms cavities. There is tooth decay and you will have teeth loss. You can develop gum disease that will make you lose your teeth. Mainly those who are at an elderly age will be ones suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's and will neglect their teeth.

Oral Health and Alzheimer's

As the average adult's life expectancy keeps rising, the need of maintaining good dental health has never been more important than it is at this age. Understanding the link between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's and dementia could potentially postpone or prevent the onset of these ailments, as well as other diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dental practitioners, older persons, and their caregivers must be aware of the association between oral health and disease, and they must exercise preventative treatment to keep disease at bay. The dentist educates the caregivers of elderly persons on ways they can take care of the individuals to maintain good oral health.
