Symptoms of Tooth Decay

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Dr. Michael Han
Symptoms of Tooth DecayWhen plaque, a sticky substance, adheres to your teeth, the bacteria digest sugar to form acids that erode the tooth enamel, causing a hole. This hole, called a cavity, grows bigger if left untreated. Untreated cavities destroy the whole tooth and may infect the blood vessels in the pulp cavity, endangering one's life. Brushing regularly and thoroughly helps clean off plaque, inhibiting its build-up. It is important to check your teeth during your oral hygiene routine for any signs of a cavity. Other indicators that a cavity is forming include tooth sensitivity, which usually allows for early treatment.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a sharp pain in your teeth after eating or drinking cold or hot foods. Tooth sensitivity is an indicator of tooth decay since sensitivity is felt in your nerves, which is in the pulp cavity chamber. The enamel, a hard material; and dentin, a tissue below the enamel, protect the pulp cavity.

Tooth Stain

One of the first signs of a cavity is a tooth stain that starts off white or light brown. As the cavity advances, the color deepens or darkens to brown or black. Looking out for a color change on a section of your teeth helps you monitor if a cavity is forming.

A hole in your Teeth

A cavity is essentially a hole in your teeth. This hole can be visible if it happens on the surface of your tooth, but if it is forming between your teeth, it might take time before you notice, and more times than not, the tooth sensitivity will alert you to the cavity. Visiting the dentist will allow you to be put on a treatment process to fix the cavity and protect the teeth as early as possible. Do not delay this kind of treatment as it can lead to more severe problems in the future.
