What to Do About Receding Gums

Posted on 7/10/2023 by Dr. Michael Han
What to Do About Receding GumsAccording to the American Academy of Periodontology, about half of all adults in the United States have some degree of gum recession. There are several things that you can do to address this issue. Here is what you should know.

What Is Receding Gum and Its Causes?

The gum tissue that surrounds your teeth is called gingiva. Healthy gums fit snugly around your teeth and form a seal that helps protect the delicate tissues inside your mouth from bacteria and other harmful substances. However, when the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, it is called gingival recession. It can occur for various reasons, including tooth brushing too hard, wearing ill-fitting dentures, and several other factors. Regardless of the cause, receding gums can lead to several serious problems, including tooth loss and gum disease. That is why it is essential to see your dentist regularly so they can monitor your gum health and treat any problems that might arise. Left untreated, receding gums can significantly impact your oral health.

Receding Gum Treatments

If you are concerned about receding gums, several treatments can help. First, it is essential to see a dentist or periodontist to get an accurate diagnosis. Once the cause of the problem is determined, your dentist will be able to recommend the best course of treatment. In some cases, simply changing your oral hygiene routine may be enough to prevent further gum recession. It includes brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and using floss or an interdental brush to clean between teeth. If your gums are already receded, your dentist may recommend a gum grafting procedure to restore lost tissue. The healthy gum tissue is taken from another mouth area and grafted onto the receded gums in this procedure. Receding gums can be treated successfully, and your smile can be restored with proper care.
